Braces that are metal are often accented with colored elastic ties, as a statement of fashion and fun. These colored ties are changed at each appointment and we have found that the choice of color is highly influenced by holidays, color of school or sports team, and friends. Adults need not worry because we have elastic ties that blend in, but it is not uncommon that a child or grandchild influences the adult patient to “show a little color.”
Other metal braces that are self-ligating have a mechanism for locking in the archwire instead of an elastic or wire tie. These braces may move teeth more rapidly during certain phases of treatment. Invisable braces on the inside (tongue side) of the teeth are a possibility for some patients also. These braces optimize aesthetics. Clear braces are another choice for those who wish to show less metal. The clear bracket blends into the tooth color showing very little. Even tooth colored wires are available for limited application. Clear braces are more effective and quicker than Invisalign for certain tooth movements. Adults, older teenagers, and patients in the business of acting often have interest in showing less metal. |
Invisalign and other clear tray options are a common choice for aesthetic treatment. With this treatment no braces are on the teeth. Instead, a series of clear trays move the teeth in small increments. This option offers easier oral hygiene and easier eating, since the trays can be removed. Certain tooth movements can be even more effective than braces, but it does have its limits. One big factor in treatment success is the patient’s cooperation in wearing the trays. For best results trays should be worn at all times except when eating and brushing teeth.

Facial growth modification, or dentofacial orthopedics, is possible on growing patients. This involves altering facial bone structure to achieve the best dental and facial appearance for some patients.
Temporary anchorage devices (TADs) are small implants that serve as anchors to move teeth in ways not possible with conventional orthodontics alone. Treatment times can be shortened, some jaw surgeries avoided, and many treatments simplified. Orthognathic surgery is jaw surgery done to achieve a more balanced jaw relationship. This orthodontic treatment is done in partnership with an oral surgeon because the dental correction is not acceptable by other means. Improvements in facial and dental appearance as well as dental function are typically dramatic. |
